Elephants are powerful swimmers in deep water and the sea. Their ability to swim and bathe is supported by remarkable adaptations.
The Science of Elephants in the Sea
Natural buoyancy and floating
Despite weighing several tons, elephants can float. Their air-filled lungs and body composition contribute to buoyancy. On long swims, they may rest upright in the water, breathing through a raised trunk. Body fat can also contribute to buoyancy.
A built-in snorkel
An elephant can swim with its body submerged and the tip of its trunk above water. Connective tissue fills the space between its lungs and chest wall; researchers have proposed that this unusual anatomy helps elephants cope with pressure differences while breathing through the trunk underwater. A study of an Asian elephant calf estimated around 90,000 muscle bundles in its trunk, enabling precise movement. In humans, breathing through a tube underwater can expose the lungs to damaging pressure differences. Estimates of the number of trunk muscle units vary; figures above 100,000 are also cited.
Propulsion and endurance
Elephants paddle with all four legs. They are capable of long swims, and journeys of up to 30 miles (48 km) have been reported. Reported swims include crossings between coastal land and islands.

Why Elephants Bathe
Keeping cool
Elephants sweat only to a limited extent. On hot days, a seawater bath cools the elephant’s body.
Relief in water
The buoyancy of the sea eases strain on the joints and can support the comfort and recovery of older or heavier elephants.
Skin care
Saltwater helps cleanse the skin. Sand after a dip forms a protective coating against insects and ultraviolet rays.
